Welcome to Cllr Will Russell's News Updates

Councillor Will Russell, a dedicated public servant, a father of three children and a churchwarden at St Peter’s South Weald. Born and raised in Brentwood, he has a deep-rooted connection to the community he serves. With a strong commitment to making a positive impact. First elected in 2011, Will escalated through the ranks of local government to become Mayor of the Borough in 2017.  Currently the Leader of the Conservative Group, Will lives with his wife & family in Kelvedon Hatch.

Councillor Russell's unwavering dedication to his community is evident in his actions. He can often be seen engaging in activities that contribute to the betterment of the area, such as voluntarily engaging in litter-picking, cleaning road signs, and cutting back overgrown vegetation. In addition, working for residents dealing with issues such as homelessness, cost of living, nuisance noise & disturbances, over occupancy, & planning issues to name a few. In addition, representing businesses, independent shops & sole traders in the Borough.

In the limited time Will gets to himself, you could possibly spot him enjoying walks with his dog in our beautiful country parks.

Volunteering

Will believes that volunteering in the community is an extension of the work he does at church. Making a difference in someones life no matter how small that difference is, is the reward!

Regardless of your politics or beliefs, if you have a matter that's important to you, Cllr Russell will bring your voice to the front to be heard.

Collaboration

It is so important to create and maintain positive relationships with our colleagues at Essex County Council. Working with them ensures delivery of services that we rely on in the Borough.

Will's Word - Holding The Coalition To Account

I was deeply surprised and disheartened to learn that the council coalition spent an excessive amount of £40,000.00 of taxpayers' money on a self-promoting vanity project, possibly aimed at raising their own profile before a crucial local election. This revelation shocked me, as that significant amount of money could have been allocated towards essential safety projects. For instance, it could have been used to implement a much-needed traffic island on Ongar Rd, ensuring safer access for residents to the bus stops outside the Eagle PH. Alternatively, the funds could have been invested in improving our depot to enhance the efficiency of the refuse collection service or clear the streets of leaf litter, empty the overflowing bins, tackle fly-tipping or even to reduce the burden of Council Tax on residents.

Furthermore, it saddened me to discover that the stories they used to promote themselves were actually initiatives led by the Conservative administration last year. It is disheartening to witness the coalition (who joined forces in May to outnumber us by one) taking credit for the work done by others.

In contrast to their promises, the coalition has failed to deliver anything substantial apart from an expensive magazine. This is a concerning situation, especially considering the progress made by the previous administration.

Calling for Pedestrian Refuge Island

There is no doubt that the section of Ongar Rd between Blackmore Rd and School Rd, is a perilous place to cross.  With bus stops to access and nearby Kelvedon Hatch School there really needs to be some safety features provided for pedestrians.

I have wrote to Highways Officers and the Chair of the Local Highways Panel, County Councillor Lesley Wagland calling for two Pedestrian Refuge Islands like those already sited at each end of this section of the road.  I am determined to see these safety features installed for the safety of our children and those with mobility issues, and with your support and that of our County Council I will see to it that we have them installed.

Nags Head Lane Development

I was taken aback when I received a letter from one of the coalition Councillors expressing their strong opposition to the Nags Head Lane development. It's not surprising that they are against it, considering all the Conservative members shared the same view when debated at the Planning Committee. However, by making this opposition public, the Councillor has essentially restricted themselves from voting on the matter.

I have been actively involved with the Mascals Gardens Residents Association since its inception. I attended the consultation organised by the developer and contributed to the strategy to fight against this application. Therefore, I feel deeply disappointed by this decision, as it will undoubtedly hinder our chances of success in this battle as it has now been called back in to the planning committee to be decided again.
